The Si Si Gwad is an Anishinaabe prophecy that states that, in every generation, there will be one person who hears their ancestor’s voices through the murmur of the leaves on the trees, and remembers. Ignatia Broker writes about the Si Si Gwad and the story of Oona, the one that remembers, in her book Night Flying Woman.
While I do my work, I always strive to remember the Si Si Gwad - I listen to the sounds of my ancestors voices in the wind of the trees, or out on the waters of the Salish Sea. My goal is to honour their sacrifices and the gifts they passed down to me through our connected, powerful, resilient DNA.
